Gear up: 5 gadgets you must have this spring

Much to the chagrin of Ned Stark, the abominable snowman and Bonhomme Carnaval, spring is coming. With the arrival of warmer weather, now is the time to get outside and start snapping some great nature and street photography.

As I dream of the warmer days ahead, I’m also taking this opportunity to share my spring 2016 gear wish list to take my photography to the next level.

1. The Everyday Messenger

Everyday Messenger, Camera Bag, gadgets, gearThis camera bag first caught my eye on Kickstarter and today, the Everyday Messenger is Kickstarter’s most funded bag ever, having raised more than $4 million on the crowd-funding site. For me, what really sets this bag apart from other camera bags, is that it doesn’t look like a camera bag, yet offers enough padding to protect your gear. There’s also enough room for multiple lenses, extra batteries and a laptop.

2. Canon G7x

As much as I love my DSLR camera, some situations, like impromptu road trips, long hikes and weekend getaways, are better suited for smaller cameras. While cell phone cameras have made huge strides in recent years, they still don’t pack the same punch as a good point-and-shoot camera.

The Canon G7x is a great alternative. The latest model features a new 1.0-inch, 20.2 megapixel high-sensitivity sensor, which, according to Canon, achieves a beautiful balance between high sensitivity and high image quality. Also, with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, you can post photos and videos directly to your social media accounts from the camera.

3. Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens

This medium telephoto lens offers a razor sharp focus, which is great for portraits, events and street photography, giving photos beautiful background blurs. To see a few examples of the Canon EF 85mm in action, visit The Phoblographer’s web site.

4. DJI Phantom 4

Just in time for spring, DJI has released a new Phantom Drone! With a new Obstacle Sensing System, a visual tracking feature and extended flight time, the DJI Phantom 4 is reportedly one of the best consumer drones on the market.

Shameless ask – DJI, if you’re reading this, feel free to send me a drone for a test flight!

5. Samsung LED Smart 4K Ultra HD TV

If you’re going to spend time capturing stunning photos and videos, why not enjoy them on an equally amazing 4K TV? Fortunately, the marketing and technology wizards over at Samsung are making it easier than ever to own a 4K TV. Now, you can take home a 55-inch 4K TV for less than $1,000. For the first time, your family and friends may be willing to sit through the 10-hour slide show of your watching paint dry series.

I’d be interested in your thoughts about GoPro.

Jon, I’ll take them all but if I have to narrow it down I’d take the TV and camera! I can’t say I’m into the drones although it might be cool. I just bought a new camera case and I don’t really have a need for the lens. On my spring wish list is a remote shutter control because when using my 150-600mm lens at full zoom I find that if you aren’t careful when pressing the shutter button you can get “camera shake” effect. Hasn’t been a big issue but when doing night photography or trying to get a close up of a stationary subject camera shake can be avoided using a remote shutter release.

Thanks Mario – Can’t wait to see more of your ultra zoom photos!
Let me know when you pick up your first 4K TV. I’ll be there to “help” with the first viewing party 🙂
